Dr. Julie Reinhold, psyD

Julie Reinhold, Psy.D.  is a licensed clinical psychologist with many years of experience working with adults, children and adolescents.  She received her Psy.D. in School/Clinical Psychology in 1997 and over the years has worked in numerous roles at Gouverneur Health, as well as teaching psychology at the School of Visual Arts, private practice, Redeemer Counseling Services and the King’s College.  Her most rewarding and satisfying role has been developing Comprehensive DBT program at Gouverneur in 2007, serving as the team leader, and becoming a Linehan Board of Certification, Certified clinician. At BHBA, Julie practices as an individual comprehensive DBT therapist, co-leads skills groups, and supervises post-doctoral therapists and externs.

In addition to DBT, she has been trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Mindfulness for ADHD, CBT for ADHD, Written Exposure Therapy (WET), Exposure and Response Prevention (ExRP) and Supporting Teen Autonomy Daily (STAND).  Her rigorous training in evidence-based treatments, in combination with her ability to adapt to each client, has led to her ongoing growth and keeps her enthusiastic and optimistic in her work.

Julie began her work as a clinician at Gouverneur’s robust school-based mental health program in a middle school/high school adjacent to Gouverneur.  As a school-based clinician, she worked closely with teachers and guidance counselors to provide support to at-risk students. She has done so through individual therapy and numerous mindfulness, DBT skills and other workshops for students in the classrooms and with teachers in small groups.  She also worked in the outpatient clinic on site at Gouverneur. As her role as the DBT team leader expanded, she transitioned to working full-time on site in the Gouverneur Behavioral Health department as the DBT team leader.

In 2017, Julie applied for and received an H+H FIG grant to improve access to the DBT program at Gouverneur.  Through this grant, she was able expand the team, provide training for new members, and to hire a Behavioral Tech consultant, Cedar Koons, LCSW to work closely with the team to improve adherence and fidelity to the DBT model over 3 years. With Cedar’s guidance, the program and team were transformed. Cedar has continued to serve as Julie’s mentor.  Julie was instrumental in providing the only comprehensive DBT program in the Health + Hospital network.  She has also introduced DBT to numerous student therapists, staff clinicians, and served as a mentor to many in their DBT Foundational Training.  She continues to work with the Gouverneur team as a consultant.

At Redeemer, Julie served clients who were seeking therapy in a context where they felt their spirituality would be understood and integrated.  There, she offered DBT group only and DBT informed individual treatment, created community DBT workshops to the public, and trained clinic staff in DBT. She helped clients to contextualize the DBT skills within their religious beliefs and spiritual practices.

Julie has also developed a specialty treating adult and adolescent ADHD.  Through individual sessions or groups, she provides psycho-education about adult ADHD. She teaches clients strategies to help with planning, organization, time-awareness, motivation, mindfulness, as well as, DBT skills.  She has also been trained in STAND (Supporting Teen’s Autonomy Daily), a therapy that incorporates elements of family therapy, behavioral parent training, organizational skills training, and motivational interviewing. This help teens develop greater autonomy in managing their ADHD and parents to gradually change their own behaviors to reduce homework battles, improve parent-teen communication, and reduce family stress.
